The Joy Energy
As a young adult, I had a bad attitude about my brother.
I used to tell him I have no good memories of you. I would tell him stories to prove my point- you cheated at games, would knock me over and sit on me to get your way ... and I'd go on and on. Yeesh.
This didn't serve me, it made me feel like a victim, robbed me of the joy from my childhood, and made me the bully.
I remember the day I decided to change that. I would stop looking for stories that made me feel like a victim, stop bullying him with my negative stories, and I would look for positive memories.
At first, only one memory came. A beautiful recollection of being allowed to sleep outside on our lawn with my brother. It was a warm summer night, dark, with stars bright and twinkling, and it felt magical.
We read comic books under our blankets with flashlights and stayed up way past our bedtime.
I came back to this memory again and again, off and on for about a year. It brought such good feelings and it overrode all the old negative stories.
After a year other wonderful memories came. I remembered how he had always been my cheerleader, appreciating poems and songs I created as a child. I remembered fun memories of swimming in the lake and going canoeing with him and my sister. What a gift. These memories led me to other fun memories as a child.
By changing my focus I changed our relationship. It feels mutually supportive and loving today.
I have enjoyed seeing clients release their patterns of judgment and blame too. By refocusing on the joy, clients have claimed a reversal of health conditions, improved mental health, turnarounds of relationships, the release of addictions, and more playfulness and joy.
I still go to blame and judgment but I know how good it feels to take a different path, and how life is so much better for me. So now when I go to blame and tell myself negative stories, I feel even worse! This reminds me to take the path of appreciation instead.
