In our small town, wildfires surround us.
Right now, a wildfire is just a few miles from our house, but thanks to the dedicated efforts of firefighters and resources, it has been contained and right now is thankfully moving away from our homes.
Yesterday, on the other side of town, some residents were asked to evacuate as the fire near them moved closer to their homes.
Naturally, many in the community are feeling stressed and fearful.
What I know and teach is that our thoughts and feelings have immense power over how we experience life’s challenges.
Choosing to feel good, rather than giving in to stress and worry, serves us, and works better. Stress and worry can affect our sleep, harm our physical and mental health, cloud our judgment, lead to bad habits and poor decisions, and rob us of joy and the energy to live our best lives.
I’ve been choosing to feel good, and many of my close friends in this community are doing the same.
Just this morning, I met a friend who lives near the evacuated area. Instead of giving in to worry and fear, she chose to look at things differently. She knew that worrying wouldn’t serve her family, so she focused on what they could control, like clearing brush around their home, and letting go of the rest. She imagined positive outcomes for her family, regardless of how things turned out. This was helping her stay calm and be a guiding light for her young son.
