Hello Beautiful Sharon,

Just because you don’t feel like doing something doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

I think about this on nights when I don’t feel like cleaning the kitchen after dinner.

My first thought might be, “I’m tired. I don’t want to. I shouldn’t have to do anything more today.”

And of course, when I keep thinking, “I’m tired,” I feel more tired.

So instead of forcing myself or arguing with myself, I pause.

I’ll say, “You don’t have to clean the kitchen if you really don’t want to. But think about how good it will feel to wake up to a clean kitchen. And realistically, how long will it take?”

Usually, the answer is 10 or 15 minutes.

That little pause changes everything.

It moves me out of resistance and back into choice.

The brain loves the familiar. It loves to conserve energy. It would rather run yesterday’s habits, yesterday’s thoughts, and yesterday’s emotional patterns than use extra energy to make a new choice.

That isn’t because something is wrong with us. That is how the brain is designed.

Much of what we do each day runs on automatic pilot. That can be helpful. You don’t want to use a lot of brain power every time you brush your teeth, make coffee, or load the dishwasher.

But if we don’t pause and choose, the brain often defaults to the old familiar pattern, even when that pattern makes us miserable, keeps us stuck, or works against us.

“I don’t feel like it” can become the doorway into avoidance and never starting or following through ...

“I’m too tired” can become the doorway into guilt, shame, and to do lists that can haunt us ...

“I’ll deal with it later” can become a habit that leads to clutter, putting things off, and never getting around to it ...

But this isn’t just about doing things we think we should do-cleaning the kitchen, eating healthy, exercising, ...

It is also about remembering what truly nourishes us, blesses us, and brings zest into our life.

Sometimes we don’t feel like taking the hike, even though we know we come back clearer and happier.

We don’t feel like getting out the art supplies, even though creating enlivens us.

We don’t feel like playing the guitar, calling a friend, working on a project, cooking something nourishing, sitting on the porch to read a book, or stepping into beauty and fresh air ... because we got out of the habit or never established one ...

Old patterns are easier to repeat.

Research on neuroplasticity shows that the brain changes through repetition, focus, and experience. The more often we practice a new response, the more familiar that response becomes.

At first, cleaning the kitchen may feel like a decision.

Later, it becomes, “That’s just what I do.”

At first, taking a hike, making art, cooking healthy meals, or choosing something that refreshes your spirit may require intention.

Later, it becomes, “This is who I am. This is how I live my life.”
