Hello, Beautiful Sharon,

Below I share an exercise to foster greater harmony within your home.

A suggestion I've given to many caregivers over the years in my practice. 

One mom said after trying it for a month, that her kids squabling was down by more than 50 percent. She was amazed. She said she was finding her sense of humor again and found she was being more creative in how she handled things with her kids.

This exercise is to support each family member in feeling welcomed, loved, and valued.

That when done weekly will help foster foundational safe feelings to help children weather the outside storms and be more resilient despite the inevitable challenges they'll face.

A bonus, you as a caregiver will feel more appreciated and less taken for granted.

It will help you keep your families problems and challenges in perspective so you can stay more positive and expectant.

 

 




Foster Positive Family Mindset


Have each child and caregiver write down a positive thing or something they appreciate about each family member once a week.

For younger children, this might mean drawing a picture depicting what they appreciate or having a sibling or parent write it down for them, or even recording it.

Make sure each person gets those compliments to keep so they can access them again.

Be aware it can take time for meaningful compliments to flow but they will come.

Let it be just fine, if the compliments are things like, I like your hair, I liked your outfit ...

Give them examples of compliments to get things flowing. With practice everyone will get better at this appreciation exercise.

Commit to doing this for at least a month or more.

Consistency is key.

But if you miss one or two times or even a month start up again and don't use that as an excuse to stop. The rewards of doing this are big.

The positive things can be general or specific. 

"I really appreciated how you helped fold laundry it helped out a lot."

"I loved how you handle that situation with that friend who was acting mean."

"I like how you know how to have fun and enjoy your friends"

"I like your overall willingness to laugh and try new things."

"I like how you see things different from me, you make me think."

"I appreciated how when I made a mistake you cheered me on."


Get creative in how you fit this exercise in one day a week.The rewards can be big and so worth it.

Maybe you can do this in the car driving the kids to school, or driving them to after school activities, as part of a dinner out, breakfast, or before a movie night.
