We all naturally want to be happy, to thrive, and to have life work out well for us.
But often, we do the very opposite of what helps.
Instead of letting our negative emotions guide us toward soothing, relief, and higher perspectives, we end up feeding them with more of the same.

Fear separates us from clarity and blinds us to opportunities.

Anger, frustration, and sadness push us deeper into survival mode, shutting down the body’s natural healing abilities.

Tension creates more physical pain and blocks the body’s ability to repair itself.

Worry, stress, and overwhelm often drive us toward bad habits, like overindulging in sugar, alcohol, carbs in our search for relief and comfort.
Think about it: how many times have you stressed, panicked, or frozen up, only to realize later that none of it actually helped?
🎯 The Red Herring Technique
To help myself and my clients, I use what I call the Red Herring Technique.
In a murder mystery, a red herring is the false clue that distracts us from finding the real culprit.
In life, our problems, worries, and dramas are red herrings.
They grab attention. They feel urgent.
But they don’t need to pull us off the path of joy.

Notice the red herrings, not with judgment, but as guidance pointing you back to soothing, lighter thoughts, and higher perspectives.

🌀 Real-Life Red Herrings

A company overcharges you and your account can’t cover it. (You calm yourself by remembering times the impossible worked out, and trust this will too.)

A neighbor wrongly accuses your dog of barking all night. (You let it be okay that they’re mistaken, and turn your focus to a friend who adores your dog.)

A business deal falls apart from miscommunication. (You celebrate what’s gone right, and imagine this opening the door to even better communication.)

A family member argues from the total opposite belief system you have. (You remind yourself it’s not your job to change their mind, and instead focus on what you do appreciate about them.)
-
Loud music next door feels like it’s ruining your peace. (You try headphones, or soften your perspective by imagining their joy in the music.)
-
Your dad is dying, and nothing you can do will change it. (You shift into appreciation for your memories and the love you feel.)
Each of these situations pulls hard for your attention.
It’s natural to fall into negative thoughts and feelings.
But feeding them never serves you, it only takes you further from what you really want away from what your really want-To feel good and have life go well for you.
