Real Talk
I was having one of those amazing mornings, joyful, high on life, when I got blindsided at lunch with a friend.
We were sharing our successes, I was basking in hers and mine, and life felt good.
Then, from her desire for me to thrive and prosper, she began giving me advice and lecturing me on what she thought I “should” be doing to make my life better.
The message I took in? I wasn’t doing good enough. My mood plummeted. Old patterns of doubt stirred up: am I doing all the wrong things? Am I screwing this up?
I used my Calm Breath while she was talking to get calm, and it helped a lot, but the heavy feelings kept returning.
I spoke up and let her know that her well-meaning “support” was actually landing as overwhelming and making me feel bad about myself.
Despite asking her to stop, she renewed her efforts. She pointed out that it wasn’t her, it was me making myself feel bad.
Which was true. I was getting swept up in her dialogue.
Again, I used my Calm Breath and did my best to remove myself from her well-meaning lecture.
Reminding myself, I could just focus in on her good intentions instead of her words.

Later that afternoon, I still couldn’t concentrate on my to-do list.
The feelings of not good enough kept cropping up, along with resentment towards her for stirring up this trouble within me.
That’s when I recognized my opportunity to shift to supportive helpful thoughts instead.
I reminded myself that focusing on these awful thoughts in the past and feeding them just led me to escape behaviors, like eating junk food, zoning out with TV, or escalating into more bad feelings about myself and others.And that never worked out well for me. But refocusing to higher truths always brings relief, peace, and freedom.
So I asked myself the question that has helped me many times: “What higher truths can you focus on that you know are true and that feel good?”
The answers came quickly.
I thrive when I notice and bask in my successes, both big and small. I took time to do just that.
It is normal not to have all I desire right now. That doesn’t mean it’s not coming or that I am doing anything wrong. Learning and growing can be part of the fun if I don’t make my mistakes or failures a big deal. I had fun thinking about my beautiful progress and successes, and I was feeling really good again.
As I let those truths settle in, my bad feelings toward her and myself melted away.
That night, the old feelings resurfaced, stirred by the grumbly thoughts I had rehearsed earlier that day.
But this time, instead of beating myself up, I chose the path of feeling good.
I reminded myself that it was worth showing up, practicing, and reinforcing those higher truths, so I did it all over again.
The next morning, I woke up filled with unconditional love for myself and for her. Yay.
And I know that from the practice, next time I start to beat up on myself, or take others' opinions personally, I will more easily redirect to those higher truths instead.
What a beautiful opportunity she gave me.
