Real Talk

Holiday time can stir things up. And without much effort, we can slip into a negative state.

But the good news is: by choosing where we place our attention, we can turn trouble into calm and peace.

We’re designed to problem-solve, learn from experience, and create new realities.

By taking time to shift perspective, we can let go of misery and suffering, ease pain, and feel better.

When an uncomfortable thought keeps popping up, I know it’s calling me to change my thinking for relief and resolution.

And if I return to the issue with a clear intent - to get relief, to feel good, and to move forward in a positive way - I know that eventually the hold will release, and peace and resolution will come.

But if I’m not mindful of my focus, I can slide into judgment toward myself or others and strengthen negative patterns of thinking.

I know I’m in good company. Most of us were trained to negatively judge and analyze in an effort to solve problems and protect ourselves.

The intention is good.

But the approach doesn’t work.

Yesterday, I revisited something that had been bothering me and kept resurfacing, off and on. When I thought about it, sadness came up.

Yay - an opportunity.

I got clear on my intent. I want to feel good. I want to let this go. I want to feel good about myself and others.

By being clear on what I really want,  I remembered- we’re all human. We have different perspectives. Remember things differently. And we each do the best we can from where we’re at.

It took a bit of time, about half an hour, but eventually I got there - first relief, then peace. How sweet it was.

In the old days, I would have assigned a good guy and bad guy. But that never works out.

From a neuroscience perspective, the brain learns through repetition. What we rehearse, the nervous system strengthens.

When reflection is calm and curious, it supports learning and growth.

When focus turns into looping on blame, judgment, or what should have gone differently, the body receives a signal of danger.

The brain doesn’t clearly distinguish between a real event and a vividly replayed one.

Each time a stressful thought is re-experienced, the nervous system responds as if it’s happening now.

Heart rate shifts. Muscles tighten. Digestion changes. Sleep becomes lighter. Cravings get louder.

Over time, this becomes a reactive habit pattern.

Neuroscience shows that when the nervous system regulates, and recenters to calm, brain activity shifts.

Blood flow moves away from survival circuits and back toward areas responsible for reasoning, emotional regulation, and choice.

From that state, we’re clear-minded, open-hearted, and focused on living our best life in the now.
