Hello, Beautiful Sharon,

"Challenges can be fun if you don't take the temporary frustrations too seriously and imagine it will work out for you. Showing up for the uncomfortable and feeling comfortable with it will open the door to more happiness, more possibilities, and more satisfaction."

The Joy Energy

When my youngest daughter was 4, she could read simple words like Cat and Hat by phonetically sounding them out.

But when I asked her to read a word mostly she would decline because it took too much effort. She declared "I just want you to always read to me."

I knew with a bit of practice she could be a solid beginner reader and more possibilities would open up for her.

I gave her a reading primer and told her if she wanted, she could learn to read it on her own, and when she finished we could celebrate and I would bake a cake of her choosing.

I let her know I would still read to her and her sister out loud just as much as before, that it was just fine if she didn't want to, and there was no timetable or pressure of when she had to be done.

She accepted the challenge, mostly at first, I think because the idea of a party and cake sounded fun.

But I think she also had a pretty solid belief in her abilities from other past successes and she wasn't one to let temporary setbacks stop her. Common sayings as a toddler were "I can do it." and "I know how."

She blew me away as she totally got into it, with no prompting on my part, and daily did two or three pages. Her successes grew and I saw she was taking a lot of pleasure in her accomplishments. About two months later I was baking her a cake and she was a solid beginner reader.

Now as an adult she continues to keep learning, and I know enjoying new challenges is part of the fun in life for her.

She has been a good example for me, not to let my temporary frustrations or struggles hold me back and to believe in a positive outcome despite any temporary frustrations.

"There is no greater gift than feeling good in the now moment.".
