Fear zaps our energy, makes us reactive, and takes away our joy.

I think of a client who, in the past, often got caught up in fears, fueled by fixating on the news.

She became short-tempered and impatient with her husband, self-righteous and judgmental toward friends, depressed, and low energy.

When she took a break from the news and later brought it back in balance, her sad mood lifted, and her energy returned.

She started getting out again, doing things she enjoyed, and felt like a positive presence in her family’s and friends’ lives.

Constantly consuming stress-driven news, especially watching the same distressing stories on repeat, activates your nervous system and keeps your brain in a stress response.

Research after the events of 9/11 found that people who repeatedly watched graphic news coverage had higher rates of stress and trauma symptoms, even when they weren’t directly affected by the events themselves.

More recently, studies during the COVID-19 pandemic found that greater daily exposure to crisis-focused news was linked to increased worry, anxiety, and emotional distress, even the very next day.

This isn’t about ignoring what’s happening in the world.

It’s about taking care of yourself first so you have the energy, clarity, and presence to respond effectively and make a positive impact.

It’s about choosing how you consume information so it supports your mental and emotional health instead of draining it.

I invite you to check in with your mental health.

Are you feeling calm and peaceful?

Are you noticing love, kindness, and beauty around you?

Are you listening to or reading things that push you over the edge, or choosing what supports your well-being and inspires positive action?

From that grounded place, life begins to shift.

Letting go of what you can’t control.

Responding with kindness instead of reactivity.

Noticing where you can contribute or support instead of judging or carrying the weight of what you think should be happening.

When we’re mentally and physically depleted, we simply don’t have as much to give.

Calm, grounded people show up with clarity, compassion, and strength.

This isn’t about giving up on making a difference.

It’s about feeling good and doing what actually works.

Peace doesn’t come from fear.

It comes from presence, balance, and a nervous system that feels safe.
